Creative Play with Playsilks

DIY

Many times when my kids were small we would find ourselves in a park, hotel, restaurant or airplane when suddenly they would need a simple prop for pretending.

Our dear friend Torii most often requested a baby. I got good at wrapping up a playsilk in such a way that she could cradle it, love it and imagine it was her real baby.

My sons more often wanted an animal, or a throwing toy. We learned to tie silks into little animals for floor play and shooting stars to throw in hotel rooms.

Waldorf Toys ~ Shop Local

Sustainable

I love to visit towns and browse in the shops, don't you?  This holiday season I plan to buy locally as much as possible. The experience of seeing and touching items is important to me. It is also nice to get out into the world and visit with a shop keeper and possibly meet up with some friends. Small shops need our support. They provide a valuable opportunity for us, to see their carefully chosen collections. To help support them, it makes sense to spend locally!

Nature Tables and Seasonal Playsilks

DIY

A nature table or seasonal table can a beautiful addition to your home.  Keep it simple and interactive.  The important aspect is that the child is able to connect with the objects and the scene depicted on the table.  Generally, the scene should be related to the current season or an upcoming festival or holiday.  The nature table is often the focal point of a Waldorf kindergarten classroom with the scene on the table directly related to the week's activities.

How to set up a nature table in your home:

1. Find a simple table, shelf or piano top

Chinese New Year Animal Zodiac Story

Wonderful China

Long ago, in China, the Jade Emperor decided there should be a way of measuring time. On his birthday he told the animals that there was to be a swimming race. The first twelve animals across the fast flowing river would be the winners and they would each have a year of the zodiac named after them.

All the animals lined up along the river bank. The rat and the cat, who were good friends, were worried because they were poor swimmers. Being clever they asked the strong ox if he would carry them across the river.
