the lee Family
This year, Sarah’s Silks celebrates our 15th anniversary! It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed since the days that Sarah began dying playsilks in her kitchen sink. The story of our toy-making business is truly a personal one for us.
Josh
It all started with Sarah and Mike’s oldest son, Josh. He was a fun little boy who loved to play pretend. He was always dressed up as someone different - a clown, Peter Pan, an old man. Josh and his friends put on lots of shows for the family to watch. And because of his love of dress-up, Sarah dyed lots of beautifully colored silks for him to use. They were perfect – versatile, colorful and naturally soft. Throughout his school years, Josh has been an artist. He even painted a portrait of Rudolph Steiner that graces the side of one of the buildings at his Waldorf School. Josh just finished his first year at California College of the Arts and hopes to study in Florence next year.

Noah
Noah was born just as Sarah began the business. She used to dye the silks with Noah in his sling. He was always a hard worker and helped his mom from the very beginning. Noah loved to help by putting the silks in the washer ready for dye. While waiting for the next load, he would move loads of gravel all over the yard with his trucks (to help with the “landscaping”). Nowadays, Noah is in high school at Summerfield Waldorf School. He excels in violin and tennis and is on his way to becoming a master chess player! When he is all done with school, he wants to be a philosopher.

Morgan
Just when they thought they were all done with kids, along came Morgan! Morgan is nine years old, a Harry Potter expert and lover of games of any shape and size. As a matter of fact, Morgan’s first word was ‘ball’. He is also a talented climber. Sometimes, we find him on top of the storage container at work or in a tree next to his inventive pulley system for snacks. When asked about his future aspirations, Morgan instantly replies - astronaut!

Mike
Mike grew up in the Bay area in California. He studied Forestry at UC Berkeley before taking off for the Peace Corps in Guatemala. In his time there, Mike became fluent in Spanish and tried his hand at a few interesting business ventures, including growing fruit trees and mushroom farming. As a matter of fact, Mike introduced the rambutan to Guatemala, and now it is a fruit enjoyed by many all over the country. He spent his time nurturing his entrepreneurial skills as well as his relationship with future wife and business partner, Sarah. Today, Mike is the operations manager here at Sarah’s Silks. So, basically, he keeps the entire ship running smoothly and efficiently. He is also an active officer in the California Rare Fruit Growers, plays tennis often and is tirelessly learning to speak Mandarin.

Sarah
Sarah is from a family of entrepreneurs in Maine. Her mom owned a store that sold beautiful gift items with an artistic flair. Sarah was the only kid in town with a lovely, handmade Halloween costume each year. This was the beginning foundation of Sarah’s eye for beautiful colors and textures. After nursing school, Sarah joined the Peace Corps in Guatemala and met Mike. As a labor and delivery nurse who also attended home births, she fell in love with the Guatemalans' concepts of attachment parenting. When Sarah and Mike had their first son, she made dolls, toys and other crafts until finally creating a business from her homemade playsilks. Her love of natural materials, vibrant colors and good quality has led to 15 years of a successful business. Today, Sarah is the creative drive behind Sarah’s Silks. She works on product development, keeps a keen eye on quality control and focuses the overall direction of the company.
