"You were once a yellow pumpkin
sitting on a sturdy vine,
Now you are a Jack-o'-lantern,
let your little light shine."
Here at Sarah's Silks we love celebrating festivals! Halloween is a fun one that can be spent doing activities all month that are out in nature and nurturing for young children.
Wonderful ideas for a green, earth-friendly Halloween include pumpkin patch visits, followed by pumpkin carving and baking and eating pumpkin treats. Long walks gathering fall leaves and acorns. Baking bread, making candles, sitting by the fire, and of course, dressing up!
Playsilks are one of the best, most creative tools for making your own costume. We've seen children use them to become ghosts, witches, genies, flying machines, almost anything you can imagine can be created (with a bit of added magic) with a special colored Playsilk.
Adding Face Paint makes even more characters possible - think tiger stripes on cheeks paired with a tiger Playsilk.
Trick-or-treat baskets are another great earth-friendly way to stay away from plastics. Baskets are beautiful and will be used over and over in many ways.

My daughter just turned five, and for every Halloween thus far, I’ve crocheted her a costume! She’s been a lion, an elephant, and this year, a fairy, with a handmade twirly whirly rainbow dress! We have a bunch of playsilks and my daughter loves to incorporate them into her costumes – I’d love to get a set of wings for her fairy costume: yarn is not as light and floaty as silk, so it would be the perfect finishing touch! Big thank you to your company for providing such a wonderful open ended item that can be used for so many different things: a fort, a costume, a blanket, a streamer, the possibilities are endless! They are a true workhorse in my child’s toy rotation.

Our family tries to represent a children’s book or fairytale each year. This year we settled on “Dragons Love Tacos.” We already have several pairs of dragon ears and dragon silk scarves from Sarah’s Silks; just need to whip up some tails! Our black lab, Clover, will be dressed up as a taco, because everybody loves Clover!! We’ve already found some taco bandaids to hand out and taco stickers to put on candy. Plus, we have about a dozen copies of the book to give away to families that don’t already have a copy…now for designing a dragon’s taco stand…

My baby girl is obsessed with ghosts this year. We usually like to have multiple costumes in rotation the week of Halloween so ghost will definitely be one of them. It would be cute to buy a large silk and cut it out like a ghost! But we’re also thinking about buying the butterfly wings and making a costume a bit more colorful and fun! We do have a crown, silks, and Dino ears—all of which make fantastic costumes year round!
We also have been harvesting acorns and pine cones in nature and I’m thinking we’re going to do natural trick or treating this year and nurturing the treats of nature. That and swapping collected trick or treats for an approved gift basket!

We’re doing goldilocks and the 3 bears this year. My 4 year old will be goldilocks and my 1 year old will be baby bear, I’m crocheting her a little bear sweater and my husband and I will have crochet bear hoods to match.
